Ballistic Differences

The 5.56 mm NATO green tip, also known as M855, was designed with a few things in mind. Most notably, it was designed to be more accurate than the typical 5.56 round, especially beyond 300 meters. It’s a 62-grain full-metal-jacket round, and the military used the green tip to differentiate it from the older M193 5.56 ammo from the early 1980s. It’s best used in a rifle with a 1:7 or 1:9 twist rate.

Penetration Characteristics

Part of the reason for the vastly different ballistics is that the green tip uses a steel penetrator core, resulting in much greater penetration through light obstacles. Geeen tip can penetrate light barriers, such as cinder blocks, which means it might not be the best choice for casual range training or even competitions.
