Why You Should Avoid Overlooking Ammo When Training
One often-overlooked aspect of firearm training is ammo. You’ve got all the gear, all the guns, but the ammo is something you grab last minute. But should you? You didn’t consult an ammo prices chart, and now you are left buying during a price spike. Being prepared and having ammo ready to use can make your range day far smoother (and affordable). Here’s why.
Guns and Gear Shouldn’t Get All the Attention
Shooters often prioritize gear over consumables. Instead of getting ammo and targets ahead of time, they get a new holster, a new optic, or a new gun. While it’s true that your ammo is worthless without a gun to shoot it, the inverse is also true.
If you didn’t get boxes of 5.56 mm green tip, you either have to run out and hope your local gun shop or outdoor sports store has the ammo you want in stock, or you will have a very short range session.
Failure to Plan Is Planning for Failure
If you don’t plan and buy ammo ahead of time, you could be left in a few different positions. First, you have to take the time to go and buy the ammo, adding another task to your range day schedule. If you already have a reserve, you can simply pull from that. If you have an off-site stack, you can ship it ahead of time, so you're ready when you need it. Otherwise, you may have to stop by the store before the range or pay inflated range prices.
Or maybe you didn’t plan ahead, so you don’t have the right ammo you want to train with. In this case, you either forgo the trip or use the ammo you have saved for other purposes, like home defense. Creating a plan or using a service that adds to your stack with every recurring payment ensures you always have enough 5.56 practice rounds and 5.56 mm NATO green tip for home defense.
Training Consistency Starts with Consistent Ammo
Consistency is key to being a sharper shooter. Inconsistent ammo, whether it’s a different type or quality, can lead to variations in recoil, accuracy, and overall familiarity with how your firearm handles. It hampers true skill development. If you only train with training ammo, but have home defense ammo, shooting could feel different when you aren’t using the ammo you’re familiar with.
