Should weekend range shooters have an ammo stockpile? Having plenty of ammo to weather shortages and price spikes is vital. Plus, it saves you a trip to the store. But how much of your ammunition storage should you set aside for training and drills at the range? Here are a few things to consider to ensure you always have enough ammo for your weekend range trips.

How Much Ammo Should You Have?

How much ammo should you have in your ammo storage specifically set aside for range training? Ask a dozen shooters and you’ll likely get a dozen answers. However, a good rule of thumb is a case per caliber per gun chambered in that caliber. So if you have three 9mm pistols, have three cases of 9mm set aside.

Another method is to roughly calculate how many rounds you shoot in a month, and then multiply that number by 12 to have a year’s worth stored up. In the end, you want to have enough to weather any shortage, so you can keep going to the range consistently.

 Which Calibers Do You Need?

The most obvious tip is to pick the calibers you shoot most often at the range. If you’ve been practicing with an AR-15 and a Glock 19, you want 5.56 and 9mm. From there, you want to have dedicated training ammo, but also have a healthy amount of regular or match-grade ammo. 


Stockpiling training ammo can also help you manage ammo prices, ensuring you’re not wasting “the good stuff” plinking at the range. Your ratio of training ammo to match-grade might be different depending on your needs and how often you visit the range.

Where Will You Store Your Range Ammo?

With all of this in mind, the last, and maybe most important question is, where will you store this ammo? Having 2,000 rounds tucked away for the range, especially in rifle calibers, takes up a ton of space.
